Benrus Type 3X Zulu

The Type 3X Zulu draws on Benrus’s Type I and Type II watches, originally developed for U.S. military special operations in the 1970s, carrying forward the same focus on legibility, durability, and function rather than restyling them for a modern audience. It comes in two dial colorways, Green and Black, both built on the same case and movement.

The case measures 42mm across and 12.5mm tall, with a 20mm lug width, built from composite carbon and titanium with a screw-down crown. A single-domed sapphire crystal with a double anti-reflective coating covers the dial, paired with a unidirectional rotating titanium dive bezel and aluminum inner ring. Old Radium Super-LumiNova covers the dial markers and hands for low-light visibility, and the watch closes with a titanium caseback. It ships on a Velcro fabric strap.

The watch is powered by the Swiss-made ETA 2893 automatic GMT, adding a 24-hour hand for tracking a second time zone alongside a 42-hour power reserve. The watch carries 250-gauss anti-magnetic resistance and is rated to 20 ATM (660 feet) of water resistance, well beyond recreational diving depths, making the Type 3X a rugged and well-built companion on your travels.

AVI-8 Flyboy Engineer Automatic

The Fieldmaster Edition comes out of a partnership between AVI-8 and Imperial War Museums, built around the same priorities that shaped the practical timepieces service personnel actually relied on: legibility, reliability, and nothing extra. It’s offered here in four dial and strap combinations — Ashen Flight in black, Wingman Blue, Service Steel in grey, and Field Khaki — split between a printed-index layout and an applied-index dial, so the format can be picked to taste without changing what the watch does.

Each case runs 42mm across, 12.7mm thick, and 50mm lug-to-lug in stainless steel, with a pull-out crown and an anti-reflection-coated sapphire lens protecting the dial. Every colorway comes on a 22mm canvas strap with a buckle closure — grey on Wingman Blue, green on Field Khaki and Ashen Flight, khaki on Service Steel — and Japan luminous treatment on the indexes for visibility after dark. The finished watch weighs 85 grams.

Movement comes from a Japanese Miyota automatic caliber running three hands with a date function, keeping the watch free of a battery while sticking to the no-frills approach the rest of the design follows. Water resistance is rated to 5 ATM, enough for daily wear and incidental splashes.

CountyComm Ultem Embassy Pen

The Embassy Pen has government contract origins — CountyComm acquired this batch directly from a surplus contract run, which is how it landed here. ULTEM® (polyetherimide) is the same material used in aircraft components, circuit boards, and medical sterilization equipment: a semi-transparent high-strength engineering plastic rated for high-temperature service environments. It’s not a material chosen for looks. The semi-satin polish and hand finish are the aesthetic layer on top of something that was already built to perform. When this batch is gone, it may not come back.

The body is a 3-part ULTEM® construction at 5.25" x 0.50" diameter, weighing 0.75 ounces — roughly a fifth the weight of a roll of dimes, and substantially lighter than the titanium Embassy variant at 2.18 oz. The machined deep knurled grip runs the length of the working section for a non-slip hold in field or wet conditions. Gen 2 construction eliminates the o-ring seal of earlier versions via an internal threaded housing (ITH) connecting the tip to the back body, with beveled threading throughout. The titanium pocket clip is laser engraved. The included Schmidt EasyFlow 9000M is a pressurized medium ballpoint rated from -30°F to +250°F — functional across temperature ranges that would sideline a standard refill.
